Politics & Security
Europe faces ever-evolving political and security dilemmas, both within the EU and from beyond. But how exactly does this complex, multi-national governing body function? And what are the key discussions happening today? Seek to better understand what terrorism is, the impact of cybersecurity, and the effect of migration and energy security on Europe. Meet with local experts and decision-makers to better understand how the EU functions, examine the key issues they face, and the challenges of policy making in today’s Europe.

Core Course
European Security Dilemmas
Fall/Spring, 3 Credits
Europe is under pressure and what constitutes a security threat is changing, too: a larger Russian presence in the region and increased risk of terrorism, but also fundamentalist and right-wing tendencies, the risk of pandemics, cyber terrorism, and European governments struggling to respond in unison to increasing numbers of refugees. Drawing on European schools of thought within international security studies, this course explores current security dilemmas in Europe.

Core Course Study Tours
This program travels on Study Tours to the following destinations:
Early in the semester, you delve into your academic focus during Core Course Week, in which you travel on a short Study Tour for three days in Sweden, combined with a two-day seminar in Stockholm. Later in the semester, you travel again with your Core Course on a week-long Study Tour in Europe.
While on tour, theories learned in the classroom come to life by meeting with professionals and experts in your field who contribute to furthering your understanding of course topics. Study Tours are hands-on and experiential, combining theory with practice, and expose you to additional cultural perspectives. You have the opportunity to visit sites and experts in your field of interest that you may not otherwise have access too.
