Program Overview

Your Open Campus Block program in Tokyo gives you the freedom to design a study abroad experience that fits your academic and personal goals. You’ll enroll in CIEE courses and online courses taught through CIEE's global academic partner, ASU. Outside the classroom, immerse yourself in Tokyo through co-curricular and extracurricular activities like visiting historic temples, exploring neighborhoods like Shibuya and Harajuku, tasting your way through local food markets, and experiencing cultural traditions that define life in Japan. It’s a study abroad experience shaped by one of the world’s most dynamic cities!

Stroll through Akihabara

  • Academic Projects: Enroll in an optional for-credit academic project that aligns with your goals, qualifications, resume, and availability of placements.

Excursions & Activities

CIEE’s excursions and cultural activities in Tokyo will open doors for you to explore Japan’s rich diversity, language, culture, history, and timeless beauty in ways that will enhance your time abroad.

Samples of excursions and activities: 

  • Visit Kamakura, a historic coastal town known for its beautiful temples, shrines, and beaches 
  • Attend a kabuki or rakugo performance, immersing yourself in Japan's rich theatrical traditions 
  • Hand-dye a tenugui (hand towel) using Japanese indigo, learning about the ancient techniques and natural dyes that give this traditional craft its beauty
