Legislative experience in a dynamic government at a pivotal time

What better place to experience the cut and thrust of legislative operations than the Scottish Parliament? Offered during the semester only, this exciting program with the innovative Edinburgh Napier University brings you a unique opportunity to help make history by working with members of the Scottish Parliament, which re-opened in 1999 after its suspension in 1707.

This is an unparalleled practical and academic experience for students of government, law, politics, history, economics, or sociology. You’ll delve into the culture, history, and politics of Scotland and the UK through engaging academic courses and the opportunity to gain significant experience under the direction of a member of the Scottish Parliament.

Your internship placement will be with an MSP in Scottish Parliament for 2 days per week for 10-12 weeks for a min of 150 placement hours. You’ll take two required courses at the Arcadia Edinburgh Center. The Work in Thought & Action course (4 credits) provides the reflection framework and research support to maximize your placement learning, while the Modern Scottish Politics: Parliament, Parties and People course (3 credits) examines the major themes and issues of modern Scottish politics. You’ll also select two additional courses at Edinburgh Napier University.

  • This relatively small parliament works very closely with local communities, and you may be significantly involved in speech writing, planning, and community issues, enhancing your leadership and communication skills.

  • You are often given unparalleled access not only to your own MSPs but also to key figures in Scottish and British politics through party conferences, campaigning, national initiatives, and PR events.
