Program Information

Dentistry interns get the opportunity to build their knowledge in different aspects of dental work by shadowing and assisting local dentists in their daily tasks, who in turn provide them with guidance and mentorship. Build your knowledge in all aspects of dental work, from basic oral hygiene to more complex orthodontic treatments, and deepen your understanding of dental care and techniques.

This program ranges from 4-24 weeks and has start dates every other Monday throughout the year.

Your fully-hosted experience includes sourcing of your internship placement, personalization of your project plan, airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, some meals, and onsite student support. See our full list of fees and inclusions on our website.

Eligibility Requirements

Dentistry internships in Guatemala are suitable for university/college students at various levels of their relevant medical/dental studies. First year undergraduate students are eligible, provided that their studies have commenced. Recent graduates of dental school are also accepted.

Interns must be confident enough to verbally communicate in beginner to intermediate Spanish (A2, both oral and written).

Internship Details

Dentistry interns in Guatemala gain a deep understanding in a wide array of dental treatments, including general checks and surgeries, as they observe and assist experienced local dentists provide care to their patients.

Dentistry interns contribute to improving oral health and promoting dental hygiene. Under supervision, acquire a practical understanding of dentist-patient relationships, to enhance your communication skills and cross-cultural intelligence. Interns are never directly responsible for patient care, as this experience involves observation and assistance to qualified staff. The dentist-in-charge will assess the experience level of interns and instruct accordingly.

Alongside this practical learning experience, the Dental internship offers valuable personal and professional growth. This is a unique opportunity to build confidence in both general and medical Spanish communication. Challenge yourself to develop cultural sensitivity in diverse healthcare settings, as you reflect on preventive measures that improve health outcomes.

Internships can differ, as your experience will be influenced by your own level of studies, knowledge, and Spanish speaking proficiency. The duration of your internship also shapes what you’ll gain, with longer placements offering deeper immersion. While we do our best to match your preferences, all placements are subject to availability.

Typical Schedule: Monday to Friday, approx. 4 to 8 hours per day, depending on patient flow.
