Eligibility Requirements

Aquatic Conservation internships in Greece are suitable for students and recent graduates with at least one year of relevant college/university study such as biology or marine science. Interns must have a genuine interest in marine conservation and commitment to hands-on work and research activities.

This internship is conducted in English. However, interns should expect that a language barrier can still be encountered to a certain extent.

Internship Details

Nestled in the heart of Greece’s breathtaking Amvrakikos Wetland National Park, this internship offers a unique opportunity to become an integral part of crucial marine conservation efforts. Surrounded by one of the most ecologically rich areas in the Mediterranean, you will be involved in protecting and preserving the delicate balance of aquatic flora and fauna.

Aquatic Conservation internships are hosted through an NGO environmental organization, dedicated to the preservation of aquatic ecosystems. The internship itself takes place in the city of Menidi, West Attica, approximately 4 hours from Athens. Menidi is a popular site for tourists, providing rich insights into traditional Greek culture and lifestyles.

From this location, interns can easily access the Amvrakikos Wetland National Park. As one of the country’s most significant natural reserves, the site provides Aquatic Conservation interns with a wealth of insight and experience.

The protected wetlands span a large area between the Ionian Sea and the Pindus mountain range. The park encompasses sixteen natural habitats, including salt water marshes, lagoons, river deltas, and freshwater wetlands - all of which provide vital habitats for a wide array of species. Included within the Amvrakikos Wetlands National Park, the Amvrakikos Gulf is a critical nursery for shark and ray species. This site serves as a unique research zone, offering an unparalleled opportunity to explore elasmobranch biodiversity and more.

As an Aquatic Conservation intern, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with experts from a leading marine conservation organization focused on safeguarding important marine and wetland biodiversity. Interns support local researchers with vital conservation efforts for some of the region’s most endangered species, such as the Critically Endangered Spiny Butterfly Ray and Duck Bill Eagle Ray.

Come with an adaptable and proactive mentality, to develop key skills in research techniques, data collection, analysis, scientific communication, and teamwork. You’ll gain hands-on experience in aquatic conservation, participating in activities ranging from snorkeling in the Gulf’s waters to conducting drone surveys.

All interns must be prepared to assist with office/admin based activities, in addition to hands-on fieldwork. Weekly tasks can include field activities, as well as office and lab. However, there is no fixed schedule for outdoor activities, since these are planned according to weather conditions, seasonality, and various research priorities. All tasks related to data collection and data analysis in the field require follow up work on a computer - all interns should bring their own laptop.

Tasks can include (but may not be limited to):

  • Collecting and analyzing data on shark and ray populations to support long-term marine biodiversity conservation.
  • Visiting local ports to gather data on bycatch and fishing practices, aiding sustainable marine resource management.
  • Conducting underwater surveys using snorkeling and BRUVs to monitor species presence and behavior.
  • Participating in aerial drone surveys to track fishing activities and assess coastal ecosystems.
  • Assisting with laboratory research, including bioanalysis and data interpretation, to understand species’ diets and roles in the ecosystem.
  • Supporting public awareness campaigns and engaging with local fishing communities to encourage sustainable practices.
If you have specific objectives in mind for research or data collection, please communicate in advance. Preferences are subject to availability, as conservation and research priorities vary throughout the year.

Typical Schedule:

Internship activities take place Monday through Friday, approximately 8 hours per day. Activity schedules can vary based on weather conditions and seasonal projects. Conditions are hot in the summer months, especially during July. Outdoor activities can be physically demanding and a reasonable level of fitness is required. Come prepared to be flexible and adaptable to conditions and site priorities.
