16 Weeks | 15 Credits

EF Global Challenge Honors Semester: Spain & Sweden

Embark on a semester of culturally immersive study in Spain to address some of our world’s most pressing problems—head on. You’ll be challenged to question conventional wisdom, examine (and even disrupt) current systems, and develop innovative solutions for global challenges. Inspired by Alfred Nobel’s belief that “Ideas can change the world,” your studies will be rooted in an EF cornerstone course: Lessons from Nobel: Design Thinking & Leadership for Social Impact. The rest of your courses at the University of Granada and EF’s Study Center in Málaga will include interdisciplinary studies and hone your Spanish language skills. Your experience culminates at the Nobel Week Dialogues in Sweden.

EXPLORE THE SEMESTER

ef-honors-dividerEF Coursework

  • Spanish Language (3 Credits): Study the Spanish language at the EF International Language School campus. At the beginning of the course, you’ll be placed in a group of learners based on your current proficiency level. Lessons will focus on vocabulary and communication.

  • Lessons from Nobel: Design Thinking & Leadership for Social Impact (3 Credits): This interdisciplinary course, designed by EF, Hult International Business School, and the University of Granada, serves as the foundation of the semester’s curriculum. Alongside your cohort, you will explore the design thinking method and the ways its innovative strategies can be applied to pressing global issues. Using these strategies, you’ll work in groups comprised of your EF cohort and local University of Granada students to develop meaningful solutions to real-world problems, such as: environmental sustainability, poverty and hunger, racism and discrimination, gender violence, conflict resolution and peaceful dialogue, and global migration. After developing a solution prototype, your group will pitch your final project at the Nobel Week Dialogues.

University of Granada

Enroll in 3 courses of your choosing at the University of Granada. Based on your Spanish language proficiency, course instruction will be in Spanish or a mix of Spanish and English. See a small selection of available courses below:

  • Introduction to Business Spanish: Aimed at students who have an intermediate level of Spanish. This course enables the student to get to know the world of business, trade and economy from a theoretical and practical viewpoint.

  • Sustainability in the Mediterranean: This survey course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive approach to local self-sustainable practices, models and cultures in the Mediterranean region. Through revising bibliographic references and local case studies, students will understand the basics of traditional and innovative local self-sustainable projects in the Mediterranean context.

  • History of Spain: We would start analyzing Prehistory and Ancient History in the Iberian Peninsula. We would continue with the fallen of the Roman Empire, the Visigoth Kingdom, Al-Andalus, the ‘Reconquista’, the Catholic Kings and the Habsburg dynasty, the crisis of Spanish empire and the Bourbon Reformism. We would learn as well about late Spanish modern history: we would study the Ancient Regime Crisis, the Liberal Revolution, the Restoration, the Primo de Rivera Dictatorship, the II Republic, the Civil War, Francoism and, of course, the Transition to Democracy.
