Internship Details
Marine conservation efforts can only progress and gain support if they’re shared. Where science-driven research is conducted to better understand important ecosystems (and their threats) work must also be done to disseminate information in the most informative, engaging, thought-provoking, and inspiring manner.
Media, PR & Graphic Design interns join a multidisciplinary team in Samos, Greece, where a Marine Conservation Institute operates year-round. The picturesque location provides rich opportunities for conservationists. Samos has a steady tourist industry and, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has interesting historical sites and attractions to enjoy.
While various teams collaborate with the NGO to advance particular conservation and research projects, “media and communications” contributors provide crucial support for information dissemination, environmental education, awareness campaigns, environmental advocacy, and more. Using modern technologies and creative platforms, there is scope for interns to assist according to their unique talents, whether focused on photography, videography, copywriting, graphic design, scientific illustration, or other.
Interns may have opportunities to assist multidisciplinary conservation teams with fieldwork activities - this will be subject to availability. In the event that an intern is afforded the opportunity to attend certain fieldwork surveys, to expand their own knowledge and understanding, they may be asked to complete theoretical training/preparation tasks.
Interns should expect that the first week of your experience will focus on settling in, building new relationships, gaining introductory and foundational knowledge. Being able to balance the motivation to get stuck in as soon as possible must be balanced with teamwork, patience, the willingness to try new things, achieve learning milestones, and ask questions as you progress.
You might find yourself using tools that are new to you - however, this can greatly benefit your future career, as it adds so much more practical experience to your resume! A commitment to responsible communication and self-management is required. Supervisors will assign tasks and projects but interns are required to organize and put suitable timelines in place for achieving the best outcome.
