Internship Details
Education is a high priority for Korean families and it shows - the country is one of the top-performing OECD countries in reading, literacy, mathematics and sciences. High standards of education are valued as status symbols and among professionals, there is high competition for quality education and jobs. Education internships in Seoul provide students and young professionals with first-hand insight into this competitive sector and the desire for excellence. Come prepared to challenge yourself, learn from a new perspective, and adapt to unique environments for personal and professional development.
South Korea is the ideal place for Education interns to immerse themselves and learn from an Asian perspective. As a nation that views education as a source of pride and means to enhance social mobility, interns may witness the strong investment in education, which helps drive people toward their dreams for the future. Interns have scope to assist experienced staff with day-to-day duties, from planning and implementing academic curriculum, to supporting students to achieve their full potential. Interns are encouraged to support students and their educators with learning, patience, and positivity, while building your own professional competency and experience along the way!
Placements might be in English language schools, hagwon (private tuition centers) and kids cafes. Interns can expect to be working closely with students from kindergarten to early primary levels.
All Education interns in Seoul are expected to approach the experience with a high degree of seriousness and professionalism. The acquisition and use of soft-skills related to communication and cultural intelligence will be essential. A variety of placement opportunities are available for internships, offering diverse learning environments. Students may range in age, background, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and more. Interns should come prepared to collaborate with local educating teams, in tasks which may relate to educational programs, curriculum delivery, student support, tutoring, positive role modeling, admissions management, communications, and more. Placement preferences are considered but always subject to availability.
Education interns should come prepared to observe a conservative dress code. Clothing must be very tidy and quite formal. Visible tattoos and piercings (apart from simple ear piercings) are not considered to be appropriate. Hair, including facial hair, should be naturally colored and well-groomed. Interns are urged not to wear statement jewelry pieces and makeup must be kept minimal. For example, accessories such as long, painted fingernails and false eyelashes / eyelash extensions may not be considered acceptable. Educational and childcare institutions may have internal policies related to child/student health and safety and appearance. Such policies will often dictate the required dress code. Interns who are unable to meet the required dress code conditions may be asked to amend their appearance, prior to being able to commence the internship.
Korean language proficiency is not a requirement to join. However, interns should expect that a language barrier can still be encountered to a certain extent. Some students may not be able to communicate in English very well. In these instances, you may need to be careful to speak slowly and clearly, and have creative games or other solutions to overcome any language barriers you encounter. Come prepared and willing to surmount a language barrier (and ask for help when needed), as opposed to being intimidated by it. We encourage all interns to take advantage of Korean language lessons, which must be coordinated in advance, upon request.
In all cases, interns should expect that the first week of your experience will focus on settling in and gaining some introductory knowledge, as you will not “hit the ground running”. Rather, you should start with learning about the placement to gain an understanding of what you can build upon, develop, learn, and contribute. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor(s) understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.
Typical Schedule: approx. Monday to Friday, 8 hours. Business hours in South Korea are usually from 9am to 6pm, with an hour break for lunch. Specific/alternative schedule requirements for an internship may be communicated in advance, alongside the assigned placement details.
