Eligibility Requirements
Suitable for students and recent graduates with a strong interest in physical training, physical education, sports, sports education, physical therapy, sports therapy, youth development, health sciences, etc.
This internship is conducted in either Spanish (if the intern speaks the language), or English (via a supervisor who speaks English, if the intern does not speak Spanish). However, interns should expect that a language barrier can still be encountered to a certain extent. With the exception of fluent or native Spanish language speakers, all interns are required to attend 10 (complimentary) Spanish language lessons, within the first 2 weeks of their internship.
Internship Details
Sports are important in Spanish culture. Football is recognized as Spain’s national sport, but there are a range of other sports that are also popular within schools and clubs. Sports & Physical Education Internships provide the opportunity to share your passion for an active lifestyle, assisting young athletes to discover their own talents and potential. Interns assist local educators and/or coaches to build positive relationships, enhancing confidence, knowledge, and self-esteem for players.
As an intern, you’ll collaborate closely with educators or coaches across sport clubs, primary or secondary schools to bring fresh ideas for games, physical education, and social interaction. Typical tasks can include:
- Supporting educators and coaches with lessons
- Organizing practical equipment and events
- Practicing teamwork
- Physical health promotion and community education
- Departmental meetings
Spanish language proficiency is not a requirement to join. However, interns should expect that a language barrier can still be encountered to a certain extent. Interns should be prepared for the very natural and normal frustration of not always understanding what is being said around them. Come prepared and willing to surmount a language barrier (and ask for help when needed), as opposed to being intimidated by it.
In all cases, interns should expect that the beginning of their internship experience will focus on settling in and gaining introductory knowledge. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.
