Program Information
With the growth of the city’s population, and increasing urbanization of rural farming communities, many have turned to the cultivation of fruits and vegetables in their own backyards. This has resulted in the abundance of urban orchards and school farms, which has led to the promotion of local, organic produce and community involvement in eco-friendly practices. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to explore sustainable farming practices within an urban setting.
This program ranges from 4-24 weeks and has start dates every Monday throughout the year.
Your fully-hosted experience includes sourcing of your internship placement, personalization of your project plan, airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals, and onsite student support. See our
full list of fees and inclusions on our website.
Eligibility Requirements
Suitable for students with at least one year of study or experience related to a related field, such as Agriculture, Horticulture, Agronomy, Ecology, Environmental Science, Earth Science, etc. Recent graduates (within the past 24 months) may also apply.
This internship is conducted in either Spanish (if the intern speaks the language), or English (via a supervisor who speaks English, if the intern does not speak Spanish). However, interns should expect that a language barrier can still be encountered to a certain extent. With the exception of fluent or native Spanish language speakers, all interns are required to attend 10 (complimentary) Spanish language lessons, within the first 2 weeks of their internship.
Internship Details
As an Ecological Agriculture intern, you’ll deepen your understanding of cultivation, production, promotion and community engagement methods within the community. Tasks can include production and promotion of crop or plant varieties, farm organization and management, preparing and measuring soil corrections and fertilizers, taking care of livestock and educational workshop support. Due to the seasonal nature of this internship, it’s important to be flexible and open to changing priorities and conditions.
Spanish language proficiency is not a requirement to join. However, interns should expect that a language barrier can still be encountered to a certain extent. Interns should be prepared for the very natural and normal frustration of not always understanding what is being said around them. Come prepared and willing to surmount a language barrier (and ask for help when needed), as opposed to being intimidated by it. Interns are encouraged to make a genuine effort to interact with the Spanish language. All Seville Internship Coordinators speak English, in addition to direct internship supervisors. However, language barriers can be encountered in other aspects of your internship experience.
In all cases, interns should expect that the beginning of their internship experience will focus on settling in and gaining introductory knowledge. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.
