Whether you’re studying to be a vet or simply love animals, Animal Care Internships in Seville provide the opportunity to assist with a range of tasks. While the internship role can at times involve assistance to medical staff in diagnoses, medical procedures, and rehabilitation of a range of domestic animals - given the range of placements available - activities may not be related to veterinarian work at all times. Therefore, interns should come prepared with a flexible approach and the willingness to make a positive impact on various aspects of animal care and wellbeing.

This program ranges from 4-24 weeks and has start dates every Monday throughout the year.

Suitable for students and recent graduates with at least one year of relevant college/university study in a related field, such as veterinary sciences, animal sciences, etc.

This internship is conducted in either Spanish (if the intern speaks the language), or English (via a supervisor who speaks English, if the intern does not speak Spanish). However, interns should expect that a language barrier can still be encountered to a certain extent. With the exception of fluent or native Spanish language speakers, all interns are required to attend 10 (complimentary) Spanish language lessons, within the first 2 weeks of their internship.
 
As an Animal Care intern, you’ll support animal care workers - and may also have scope to assist veterinarians - with the day-to-day duties required to support domestic animals with optimal health and wellbeing. Deepen and enrich your skills and understanding as you interact with animals and their owners, assist with basic care requirements, treatments and evaluations for sick or injured animals.

Interns collaborate in the day-to-day provision of care to a range of domestic animals. While internship duties vary depending on needs and treatment requirements, tasks may be related to animal cleanliness, grooming and hygiene, animal exercise requirements, rehabilitation, medical care, administrative tasks for veterinarians, and assistance/support provided to pet owners. There is a broad range of placements available, such as veterinary clinics, school farms, animal shelters or equestrian clubs. Shadowing/observation of veterinarian work is subject to availability.

Spanish language proficiency is not a requirement to join. However, interns should expect that a language barrier can still be encountered to a certain extent. Interns should be prepared for the very natural and normal frustration of not always understanding what is being said around them. Come prepared and willing to surmount a language barrier (and ask for help when needed), as opposed to being intimidated by it.

To support interns with both cultural and language integration, all internships in Seville include two weeks of mandatory Spanish language lessons. These lessons are included within the minimum duration requirement of the internship. Therefore, activities at the internship placement will commence from the third week, after completion of the language program. If you are already an intermediate or advanced Spanish language speaker, you may be permitted to commence the internship placement directly. However, this will be confirmed on-site, upon review of your ability.

In all cases, interns should expect that the beginning of their internship experience will focus on settling in and gaining introductory knowledge. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.
