Internship Details

If you’re passionate about health sciences and looking to make a difference in your career, then a medical internship in Belize is for you! Public hospitals and clinics in Belize are well relied on by communities to meet a wide range of medical needs. Up-and-coming medical students can obtain excellent mentorship and practical experience from dedicated local professionals, enthusiastic to share their knowledge and clinical experience.

Medical & Nursing interns in Belize should come prepared to intern alongside a range of medical staff, assisting with the provision of care to patients. While your role as an intern can vary, tasks and responsibilities will primarily involve assisting in a participatory and observational capacity (depending on skills and experience), as well as supporting medical consultations, health workshops and community outreach activities.

Note that supervision on these medical internships is handled by a range of medical staff. Interns have scope to rotate across various hospital departments (and/or day clinics) in order to diversify their experience and can therefore collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and various department heads. All local medical staff will be in the best position to provide guidance, direction, and answer questions as they arise.

In all cases, interns should expect that the first week of your experience will focus on settling in and gaining some introductory knowledge. Understand and expect that individual internship experiences vary, as some interns are at a more advanced level than others. If you’re at a more introductory level, you should reasonably expect a more introductory internship. Likewise, if you’re interning for a shorter duration, you will have a different experience from someone who is interning for a longer duration.

Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing, what your interests and abilities are. This will help them to support your professional development, within reasonable boundaries - preferences are always subject to availability.
