This program ranges from 4-12 weeks and has start dates every Monday throughout the year.
Your fully-hosted experience includes sourcing of your internship placement, personalization of your project plan, airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals, and onsite student support. See our
full list of fees and inclusions on our website.
Eligibility Requirements
Agriculture internships in Belize are entry level and recommended for high school graduates (aged 18+), seeking to build practical skills and experience. Participants who have more advanced qualifications and experience are welcome to participate also. Interns must have the willingness and physical ability to conduct outdoor fieldwork. Resilience to variations of weather and climate is required. Plan your internship with the season and climate in mind.
This internship is conducted in English.
Internship Details
Agriculture internships in Belize provide an immersive experience, assisting with one of the country’s largest industries (second only to tourism). Approximately 20% of Belize’s land is dedicated to agricultural activities. As a leader in protecting biodiversity and natural resources, over 60% of the country’s remaining territories are dedicated to forests and protected areas. Come prepared to roll up your sleeves, put on a sturdy pair of shoes, and enjoy the great outdoors within beautiful community settings.
As an Agriculture intern in San Ignacio (Cayo District), you’ll deepen your understanding of local practices related to themes such as gardening, animal husbandry, landscaping, orchard development and maintenance. There is scope to learn about cultivation, production, and community engagement methods. Long-term interns may additionally have the option to access a research center, where training and information is accessed to better assist farmers.
The Cayo District of Belize is primarily an agricultural district, where chief crops include citrus fruit, as well as bananas. Practical tasks can be related to production and promotion of crop or plant varieties, farm organization and management, preparing and measuring soil corrections and fertilizers, taking care of livestock and educational workshops. Due to the seasonal nature of this internship, it’s important to be flexible and open to changing priorities and conditions. Preferences are always subject to availability.
Supervision varies, as interns may spend time with different staff/professionals, such as farmers, gardeners, vet techs, and animal handlers. If assistance is required with any internship paperwork, this should be discussed with Intern Abroad HQ Program Managers in advance, as well as during the in-country orientation.
All internship participants must come prepared and equipped for fieldwork. You will need to ensure you have proper footwear, work gloves, adequate sun protection, and clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty. Expect that the beginning of this internship experience will focus on settling in and gaining introductory knowledge. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.
