Program Overview
This program challenges students to move beyond the generalizations of Scandinavia by exploring real-world applications of welfare policies, labor rights, and environmental sustainability in Norway. Through the many included excursions, guest speakers, and active-learning experiences, students will examine both the successes and contradictions that may be beneath the surface of one of the world’s happiest countries.

Highlights

Courses
Your coursework is in English, there is no Norwegian language requirement. All students will complete the following courses together as a cohort:
- Contemporary Nordic Issues in Comparative Perspective (Political Science/Sociology 332)
- Making the Modern Welfare State: Nordic and U.S. Approaches (History 359)
- Environment, Innovation, and Sustainability: The Nordic Economic Model (Economics 279)
In addition to the above shared courses, each student will be allowed to select
one elective course from ØUAS (also taught in English). Availability of elective courses varies per term, and according to schedules, but a sample list of courses include:
- Norwegian as a Foreign Language I and II
- Political Theory
- Political Communication
- Communication Design
- Media Studies
Directed Study (INS 299), and Independent Study (INS 499) options are also available. Additional courses from the ØUAS catalog taught in Norwegian may be available to those with high levels or fluency in Norwegian.
Student Life
Students will live in Fredrikstad, a mid-sized city, located about 60 miles south of Oslo. While living in campus housing, students will find most everything they need within walking distance including many restaurants, shops, and cafes to explore. There is even a free river ferry that travels on the river from one end of town to the other to help you explore Fredrikstad in a uniquely Norwegian way!
All CGEE-Norway Students will be placed in campus housing with ØUAS. The housing is modest but very modern dormitory style, each student will get a private bedroom and bathroom with shared common spaces (kitchen, dining tables, lounging area), exercise rooms, and weekly activities by the staff, giving students plenty of opportunity to make friends with Norwegian and other international students.
This program includes regional travel (included in the program fee). Excursions include locations such as: Oslo, the West Norwegian Fjords (Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord), and a multi-day excursion to neighboring Scandinavian countries such as Denmark (Copenhagen) or Sweden (Lund and Gothenburg).
