Internship Details

While Guatemala has a public healthcare system, many people - particularly poorer families in rural areas - have trouble accessing critical health services. Medical internships can play a significant role in providing healthcare to those who otherwise may not get it. This is a tailored medical internship for college students at all levels, where your placement assignment and duties reflect your experience, internship duration, and level of Spanish language proficiency.

Medical Internships for pre med students

Pre-med interns or students in the early stages of medical school / health sciences are placed in health support schools, elderly homes, and programs for individuals with disabilities. Placements are around the city of Antigua, and surrounding communities such as Tecpan.

Interns shadow and assist local doctors and nurses, and can help with administering medicine, treating small ailments, keeping medical records, conducting health workshops, and assisting with various therapies.

Medical Internships for medical students

Medical students in their third year or above may be placed in rural clinics, interning alongside local doctors and nurses. Clinics are scattered throughout wider Antigua, or even in the Mayan highlands.

Interns can help to prepare and present health and hygiene workshops in schools, helping to measure patient vital signs or run vaccination campaigns, shadowing doctors in appointments, pharmacy assistance, or in laboratory diagnostics. Local clinicians often organize medical outreach programs to bring healthcare to rural villages, and if these coincide with your internship then you may be able to assist, teaching indigenous families about basic health measures and nutrition.

Note that specific internship activities will always depend on each intern’s experience, so the level of responsibility you’re given will vary. Short-term interns can expect to have an introductory experience, as it is standard for every intern to spend time establishing foundations to build upon. Interns with a greater command of the Spanish language will be more able to interact with patients.
