This is the perfect internship for those looking to get stuck in and gain hands-on experience assisting with environmental sustainability and education. Interns support reserve staff in strengthening and promoting training programs on environmental issues and sustainable development.

All interns in Guatemala are accommodated in various homestay accommodations. Interns are matched to an appropriate host family, taking into consideration convenient proximity to their internship placement. Typical host families in Guatemala usually comprise of two parents and children or a single parent with children (the ages of a host family’s children can range from young and still living at home, to adults living independently).

Eligibility requirement

Suitable for participants with a background in biology, Zoology, Forest Management or related field. High School graduates aged 18+ are welcome to apply.

Language requirements

Interns must be confident enough to communicate in basic to intermediate Spanish.

Internship Details

Environmental Conservation interns in Guatemala will be based at a private reserve involved in conservation, education and research. The reserve has a large focus on preserving the fragile ecosystem in protected areas throughout Guatemala, including the pinewood forest in which it is located which shelters a high diversity of mammals, bats, reptiles and fungus.

Interns should come prepared to assist a small team in their implementation of training and workshops on conservation topics, promotion activities, new research and the creation of new strategies. You’ll be guided by local representatives who are passionate about the environment and conservation, assisting with tasks such as:
  • Generating Information for conservation and sustainable management
  • Improving the quality of habitats for biodiversity
  • Strengthening training programs on environmental issues and sustainable development
  • Supporting the education of sustainable development in the community
Note that the tasks listed are examples of typical activities. The specific role that your internship will entail will be influenced by which area your support is needed most at the time of interning.

  • Complete your registration: After you have been accepted on your chosen program, you can secure your place by paying the Deposit.
  • Pay your Balance: This is only due 60 days before your program starts.
