Internship Details

Despite New Zealand’s geographical isolation (or maybe because of it) the island nation has long been a favorite destination for tourists, from all around the world. Condé Nast Traveler has voted New Zealand as a favorite destination and The Telegraph has ranked it as the world’s best place to visit! The tourism and hospitality industry has always comprised an important sector of New Zealand’s economy, so if you’re passionate about gaining first class experience in this field, there’s no better place to intern abroad!

Tourism & Hospitality internships in New Zealand are based in Auckland. Although tourists to New Zealand will travel the country, to explore the attractions of both the North and South Island, the vast majority of these travelers will enter and exit via the Auckland Airport. Therefore, this city - the country’s largest - serves as the ideal hub to build your skills and gain insight for the development of your career, within a fast-paced and exciting industry.

Possible internship placements may include examples such as working with travel agents, travel advisors, tourism managers and developers. Interns who have a background and experience which is more aligned with the hospitality industry may receive other placements, such as restaurants and hotels. All specific placement requests are subject to availability. General activities can include helping with the production of marketing materials, assisting with exhibitions, seasonal events or festivals, advising clients, assisting with the arrangement of itineraries, liaising with local vendors, assisting with day to day administrative tasks and bookings.

Interns who come to Auckland should come prepared to work positively and enthusiastically, with both multinational and multicultural teams and clients. New Zealand’s Tourism and Hospitality industry often includes strategies for economic development and environmental sustainability, facilitated in cooperation with local indigenous groups. While cultural sensitivity is required for hosting clients within the sector, you can also gain insight into how cultural intelligence is equally important for business management and strategic development within the industry itself.
