Program Description:
Community Greece
Join International Volunteer HQ, the world’s leading volunteer travel organization, and support the Community Support Volunteer Program in Greece.

This program is based in a community center in Athens that provides a safe space for refugees and asylum seekers to upskill, secure steady employment and integrate into Greek society. As a volunteer in Greece, you’ll help local NGOs work together to provide workshops, language classes, and other essential services for refugees.

Volunteers are accommodated in a dormitory-style hostel conveniently located in the heart of Athens. Only a 4 minute walk from Omonia Square, where the second most central metro stop is, and a 30 minute walk to Acropolis. The neighborhood offers many amenities, supermarkets, bars, local coffee shops, ATMS’s, shopping malls and all transportation means. The airport is just 45 minutes away via public transportation.

The program has start dates on the first and third Monday of each month throughout the year.

This program ranges from 2-12 weeks. Your fully-hosted experience includes airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals and 24/7 support. Detailed pricing information for your duration is available on our website.

Your Impact

The city of Athens has welcomed thousands of refugees and asylum seekers over the past few years due to continuing violence in neighboring countries. Access to steady employment for vulnerable populations is often a much needed lifeline.

Nonprofits are working together with refugees and asylum seekers to help them to up-skill and gain employment to ensure they can support themselves and their families in Greece. The non-profits offer a safe space to participate in language classes and workshops in the fields of carpentry, IT & Media, tailoring, welding, electricity, and more. Through these opportunities, the unemployed are armed with the tools needed to rebuild their lives and help to create a pathway towards social integration in their new home.

As a volunteer on the Community Support project, you will be placed in a community center to provide support and ensure that the center is able to operate smoothly. On a daily basis you will be interacting with people from a wide range of countries seeking a better future. You can expect to help with a range of tasks such as, meal preparation and distribution, basic administration, gardening, cleaning and assisting teachers with their workshops and lessons.
