Program Description:
English India
Join International Volunteer HQ, the world’s leading volunteer travel organization, on the Teaching project in Delhi or Kerala. You will have the opportunity to step into the classroom and gain teaching experience. India has a shortage of teachers and local staff have such heavy workloads that students are often left to their own devices while teachers rotate to other classes. Volunteers can teach valuable lessons and help eager students learn English - a skill which can give them far greater prospects later in life.

Kerala offers start dates every Monday throughout the year. Delhi offers start dates on the first and third Monday of each month.

While volunteer schedules depend on the particular projects and placements, a typical day might look like this:

Delhi:
8:00 AM Breakfast at the homestay
9:00 AM Volunteers leave home and travel to their placements.
12:00 - 2:00 PM Lunch break either at the placement or homestay.
2:00 - 4:00 PM Work at the placement usually ends. Volunteers are free to travel back to the homestay, go sightseeing, or do some shopping.
7:00 - 9:00 PM Dinner at the homestay.

Kerala:
8:30 - 9:30 AM Breakfast at the volunteer house.
9:45 - 12:00 PM Volunteers leave home and travel to their placements.
12:30 - 2:00 PM Lunch break either at the placement or volunteer house. Volunteers can also take this time to lesson plan their sessions for the following day.
2:00 - 5:30 PM Work at the placement. Afterwards, volunteers are free to travel back to the volunteer house, go sightseeing or relax in one of the artsy cafes in town once their project is over.
6:00 - 7:30 PM Dinner at the volunteer house.

Weekends are left for free time and exploration.

This program ranges from 1-24 weeks. Your fully-hosted experience includes airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals and 24/7 support. Your Impact

Children growing up in disadvantaged areas around India often face significant challenges, and it can be hard for them to grow beyond the lives they, and their parents are born into. However, by acquiring new knowledge and skills, their chances of living fulfilling and productive lives increase.

One skill that opens up new opportunities is the ability to speak English. Fluent volunteers play a valuable role in helping children to learn and practice the language.

As a Teaching English volunteer you will teach students aged between 5 and 11 years old in schools in Faridabad, or between 6 and 12 years old in Kerala. English teaching duties usually include:
  • Teaching English classes
  • Tutoring students
  • Talking with students
  • Helping with pronunciation and word use
  • Lesson planning
  • Assisting with math and science lessons
  • Teaching small classes of up to 10 students
  • Building the English language ability of children
