Solving Real-World Challenges in Belize

Program Overview

Go beyond theory: Apply the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the field. This field-intensive short-term program explores the critical intersection of community development and sustainable economic development, bringing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to life. Students will engage in real-world problem-solving alongside local communities, focusing on Belize’s unique challenges and assets.

 
  • Hands-On Service-Learning: Collaborate with community partners to implement projects that meet local needs, such as composting, climate change controls for farmers, and working with Belizean rural schools.
 
  • Multidisciplinary Focus: Learn about key aspects of the Belizean economy, including agriculture, tourism, education, and environmental preservation, analyzing development challenges from the macroeconomic to the community level.
 
  • Professional Skill Development: Develop professional skills and knowledge while fostering an appreciation for social responsibility, global awareness, and diversity through discussions, guest lectures, and site visits.

Program Highlights

This field-intensive program  is structured around immersive field experiences and service-learning projects in Belize's Cayo and Southern districts:
 
  • Direct Community Service-Learning Projects: Collaborate with local communities on projects focusing on sustainable agriculture.
     
  • Exploration of Green Enterprise: Study practical sustainable development models through visits to enterprises, upcycling, and Regenerative Farming.
 
  • Marine Experience: Travel to Southern Belize for Marine Conservation Projects and a Snorkeling excursion, linking conservation efforts to alternative livelihoods and tourism development.
 
  • Hands-on Economic and Environmental Analysis: Engage in unique cultural excursions and participate in ecological tours that benefit the environment and people.
