Program Description:
Evidence of Rome’s long and fascinating history is everywhere you look. The famed Colosseum from its former days as the seat of the Holy Roman Empire attracts tourists and archaeologists alike; pilgrims and artists flock to the Renaissance-era Sistine Chapel in Vatican City; ornate fountains are scattered throughout the city’s many piazzas. Rome is a bustling capital city is Italy’s seat of government, and is home to both United Nations agencies and prestigious universities. The city’s importance to international politics includes the many embassies to Italy and the Holy See and the NATO Defense College.

Like Italians and immigrants who come to Rome for its diversity of opportunities, Lexia students have the chance to experience all that this historic city has to offer. Through engagement in historical scholarship and daily life, students will immerse themselves in Roman culture and synthesize their experiences in a meaningful way.

The Lexia in Rome Area Studies and Culture program introduces students to the history, politics, economics, art, archeology, and architecture of Italy. Coursework, language training, excursions, and field research exercises and projects help students to grasp the connections of Rome’s past to its future and provide comparative analysis of Rome’s role in the Mediterranean region and international scene.

No prior knowledge of Italian is required. However, intensive language training is provided, thereby helping students to develop the skills and confidence to live, study, and conduct research in a foreign country. In addition to the language training students will also be encouraged to partake in several scheduled activities in Italian. Social encounters with Italian nationals, as well as organized field trips, all contribute to a greater understanding of Italy.
