Program Description:
Based at Bogazici University, the premier English-language University in Istanbul, the Lexia in Istanbul program introduces students to the history, politics, economics, art, archeology, and architecture of Turkey. The program comprises coursework, language training, excursions, and a field research project, all of which contribute to students’ understanding of Turkish culture and issues in the Eastern-Mediterranean region. The program supports interaction and dialogue between Lexia participants and Turkish faculty and students whenever possible. It also encourages participation in Turkish community events, institutions, and family life. No prior knowledge of Turkish is required, as all coursework apart from the language instruction is in English. Social and academic encounters with Turkish and other foreign students, as well as organized field trips, contribute to a greater understanding and appreciation of Turkey, a country located astride two continents – Asia and Europe – with a unique blend of Eastern and Western traditions. As a powerful regional presence in the Eurasian landmass with strong historic, cultural and economic influence in the area between Europe in the west and Central Asia in the east, Russia in the north and the Middle East in the south, Turkey has come to acquire increasing strategic significance.
