Academic Program
The Planting Hope Service Learning Program is provided through collaboration between UNM Occupational Therapy Graduate Program and Planting Hope in Nicaragua. The focus of this service learning program will be working with children with disabilities and their families in the small town of San Ramon.
During this clinical experience, Occupational Therapy graduate students will work under faculty supervision, to complete the following outcomes:
- Assessment of children identified through the Los Pipitos Physical Therapy and Learning Center
- Intervention suggestions will be provided to families and Los Pipitos staff
- Staffing and educational inservices will be held with Los Pipitos staff
- Parent training and education sessions will be held with caregivers of children identified
- OTGP students will work with Los Pipitos staff on setting up the center to create an environment conducive to the needs of the children identified.

This experience is in conjunction with OCTH 644L, Applied Occupations IV (Pediatrics) as a Fieldwork I experience typically scheduled in March (See attached course syllabus).
Program Housing
Students and Faculty are housed through home stays with local families.

Cost Information
Students are required to pay airfare (approximately $600- 700 round trip), as well as program fee of $1200. Program fee includes:
Pre-departure team meetings, information and travel arrangement support
Long distance transportation to and from airport
Local transportation, including taxis and buses, for program activities
Basic, comfortable, clean homestay
Program coordination by local Planting Hope staff
Activity and service coordination on site
Most meals
Additional Cost Information:
Students should anticipate and spending approximately $150 on meals, snacks, and outings.
UNM required travel insurance approximately $40
UNM Global Education Office Study Abroad Application fee $50
UNM Travel Clinic Consultation (recommended) $15
Recommended immunizations/medications costs vary with your insurance plan. Malaria, Hep A, Hep B, and Typhoid are CDC recommended vaccines for travelers to Nicaragua.
