Program Description:
Lithography in Mexico is a three-week Summer Pre-Session course offered by the University of Arizona. It will take place primarily in Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico, where students will work in the lithography facilities at the Rufino Tamayo Workshop. Students will spend two days in Mexico City where they will visit its museums and parks, including the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera Studios. Oaxaca, located 287 miles south of Mexico City, is one of the world’s great meccas of art and printmaking.

Students will learn first hand what it means to live and create art in one of world’s most unique regions - one renowned worldwide for its contemporary arts and crafts, its culinary triumphs, its indigenous cultural diversity, its ancient history, its year-round perfect weather, and its numerous glorious festivals.

This course fulfills School of Art BFA degree requirements and it provides transfer credit to non-UA students.  During the three week course, students will visit over 12 museums, archaeological sites, and ecological wonders, and they will also be hosted for visits to the studios of some of the region’s major contemporary artists.

Four courses will be convened together at the same time. Students will take one of the following depending upon class standing and/or skill level:

Art 255 - Lithography I (3 Units): This beginning course covers the fundamentals of black and white stone lithography as practiced on Mexico and it will cover the basics of color through the use of polyester plate lithography.

Art 355 - Lithography II (3 units): This intermediate course is a continuation of Lithography I.  Similar skills and techniques will be covered but at more accomplished levels.

Art 504 – Special Topics in Studio Art - Topics in Studio Art is intended for the graduate art student who may or may not have experience in lithography or printmaking
