PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Join CCSA as the Ireland Early Program visits both Irelands, north and south. While based in Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland, we'll uncover the cultural significance behind Glendalough, Trinity College and places made famous by such writers as James Joyce and Jonathan Swift. Then we'll head north, tracking the history of Ireland, ancient and modern, stopping at the magnificent coastal World Heritage Site, The Giant's Causeway, and visiting locations associated more recently with the Troubles in Belfast and Derry. Then it's off to the beauty of the mountains, valleys and islands of the West of Ireland where Gaelic and traditional music can sometimes still be heard. Discover the beauty and the tragedy, the history and the hope that defines this land still struggling to be united.

By combining this intensive study abroad experience with course-specific directed study activities preceding and/or following the travel portion of the program, students may earn three semester hours of college credit.

Please carefully read the Program Details section for additional information pertinent to all CCSA programs.

ENGLISH/WRITING

With Pen in Hand: Ireland through the Writer's Eyes

Ireland is a land of saints, scholars, poets and a few rebels. On this program, you will experience the magic and mysteries of Ireland, while reading and writing in the very place of inspiration. You will experience the rich culture and troubled past of Dublin and Belfast, while rounding out the aesthetic with trips to Glendalough in the Republic and the Giant's Causeway in the North. At the end of your trip, you will have journaled your way across the land, creating your own travel narrative worthy of publication or at the very least a great collection of memories.

Prerequisite: one semester of First Year Composition or equivalent

MUSIC

Irish Music

Come to Ireland to study Irish music! Students will attend and review/critique a tentative minimum of four live music events onsite in Ireland, featuring events such as concerts and dance performances, pub music-making, church services and Galway's famous Trad on the Prom. Study will include a brief survey of the history of Irish music and its cultural context. The Irish have a centuries-old knack for music-making and dancing, from "The Minstrel Boy" and "Londonderry Air" to U2 and Riverdance. Dublin, Belfast and Galway offer a wealth of opportunities to hear live performances by professional and amateur musicians and dancers.
