The Temple University Japan (TUJ) - Tokyo study abroad program offers U.S. and Canadian undergraduates the opportunity to study in Tokyo for a semester, full academic year, or summer. A broad range of academic areas are offered, along with credit-bearing internships and extensive extra-curricular offerings. All classes are taught in English, outside of the language classes. Study abroad students study alongside degree-seeking students from Japan, the U.S., and about 70 other countries around the world.  

 


 

PROGRAM OVERVIEW  
 

Language of Instruction  
 
English, except for Japanese and other language courses. 
 
 
Course Load  
 
Temple Japan offers a wide variety of disciplines. Typical course loads and credits by term:  
 
  • Semester: 4-5 courses (12-18 credits) 
  • Summer: 3-4 courses (9-12 credits) 
 
*Non-Temple students should verify the minimum number of credit hours required by their home institutions.

In addition to coursework, credit-bearing internships are offered every term. Consider making an internship a part of your academic load to get even more out of your experience abroad.  
 
 
Activities and Excursions 
 
The Student Engagement team at Temple Japan offers many opportunities to enhance your experience and enrich your social and cultural life while in Tokyo:  
 
  • Excursions and field trips that enhance your understanding of Japanese culture, such as visits to Japanese festivals, workshops on traditional Japanese crafts, and overnight trips to other areas in Japan.  
  • Wide variety of student clubs & organizations for many interests

ELIGIBILITY 

 
Eligibility is limited to students who: 
 
  • Are at least 18 years old at the time of application 
  • Are enrolled as a full-time matriculated student at the time of application as well as during the semester prior to studying abroad. 
  • Will have completed at least two (2) semesters of college-level study by the start of the program. 
  • Meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirement, on a 4.0 scale from all colleges/universities attended. 
  • Temple Semester Programs: 2.75  
  • Temple Summer Programs: 2.5 
  • Remain in good academic standing from the time of application until the start of your term abroad; students on academic warning are not eligible to participate. 
 
We welcome the participation of qualified students from all U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities.

Pre-departure Preparations  
 
Once accepted, we provide you with detailed pre-departure materials designed to guide you in preparing yourself for your time abroad. Pre-departure materials include: 
 
  • Course registration information 
  • Passport information and visa information 
  • Health and safety information 
  • Housing information 
  • Cultural preparation information and resources 
  • Billing information 
  • Travel and arrival information 
 
Pre-departure Orientation 
 
After your acceptance, our staff hosts pre-departure orientation sessions for all students. 
 
 
Housing 
 
Temple Japan-Tokyo housing options may vary by term. Check with the Program Management Team for information about your term's available options. Types of housing include: 
 
  • Program-arranged housing 
  • Independent housing: homestays 
  • Independent housing: other
     
We encourage you to apply to the program well before the deadline as program and/or housing capacity may be limited.  For information about housing options, visit our Temple Japan webpage and select the “Housing” dropdown. 
 
 
On-site Orientation and Support  
 
An on-site orientation takes place after you arrive in your host city and may include:  
 
  • Introductions to the faculty, staff, and resources of the program  
  • Facilities and neighborhood tour  
  • Cultural norms and expectations 
  • Review of health and safety matters and emergency procedures  
  • Cultural activities/excursions  
  • Housing orientation 
 
Details about on-site orientation are provided to accepted students before departure.
