Program Overview

Your Summer Tropical Ecology + Conservation program in Monteverde lasts 8 weeks. You will enroll in four CIEE courses, including two biology courses, independent research, and one Spanish language course.  Enhance your experience with co-curricular and extracurricular activities while immersing yourself in Costa Rican culture. Excursions & Activities

CIEE’s excursions and cultural activities in Monteverde will open doors for you to explore Costa Rica's rich diversity, language, culture, history, and timeless beauty in ways that will enhance your time abroad.

Samples of past excursions and activities:

  • Immerse yourself in the steamy jungle of the Lowland Rainforest
  • Visit natural destinations, such as national parks or reserves, to experience Costa Rica’s biodiversity and natural beauty
  • Rise with the sun for birding tours or farm chores and experiencing biodiversity after the sun goes down with a guided night hike

Research

Put your skills to work on an independent research project in tropic ecology or conservation, from observation to a presentation of your findings. At every step, you'll be guided by an expert faculty advisor. Past projects have explored beetle habitats, hummingbird habits, and the prey of cane toads.
